Men's Basketball kicks off tournament time with dominant, blowout victory over Detroit Mercy

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — A fifth straight win for Northern Kentucky men's basketball has the Norse just one win away from another trip to Indy, as NKU kicked off the Horizon League Tournament with a blowout win over Detroit Mercy. 

NKU had four players finish with 15 or more points, while forcing 17 DMU turnovers on the defensive end of the floor.

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN

  • Dan Gherezgher led NKU in scoring finishing with 19 points on 5-11 shooting, hitting three 3PT baskets and shooting a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. 
  • Trey Robinson had a highly efficient night, scoring 18 points, dishing out five assists, grabbing three boards and notching three steals. Robinson led the team at the free throw line, finishing 7-8. 
  • Josh Dilling knocked down five threes, scoring 16 points. Dilling grabbed three boards and dished out two assists. 
  • Sam Vinson scored nine points, dished out six assists, and grabbed three rebounds. 
  • LJ Wells dominated in the paint, grabbing six offensive rebounds and nine total while scoring 16 points, Wells hit a three and had a pair of steals. 
  • NKU shot 51.6% from the field, scoring 99 points — tying the most ever for the Norse in a Horizon League Tournament game. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Northern Kentucky came out hot, scoring 49 first half points including 29 in the first 10 minutes.
  • The Norse led 49-37 at half. 
  • Detroit Mercy cut the lead to five, but the Norse responded with a 10-1 run and continued to build on the lead. NKU led by as much as 27 in the final minutes, moving on to the quarterfinals. 

UP NEXT

  • The Norse are set to head to Cleveland State in the 2025 Barbasol Horizon League Championship Quarterfinals on Thursday.
