Early offensive push, shutdown pitching power Norse past Titans

DETROIT, Mich. – Northern Kentucky University Norse Softball looked to keep building momentum as the end of the Horizon League season looms, and the Norse look to improve their standing before the conference tournament.

In Saturday's series finale with Detroit Mercy, NKU came out hot, scoring five runs in the first two innings. The Norse rode the red-hot arm of freshman pitcher Kyndall Ford, who allowed just one run in the game as NKU claimed its fourth conference series win.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 5, Detroit Mercy – 1
LOCATION: Buysse Field - Detroit, Mich.
RECORDS: NKU 20-21 (11-6 HL), UDM 10-26 (7-10 HL)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The story of the game was similar to game two on Friday, as Kyndall Ford threw another complete game win, this time allowing just one run, one walk, seven hits, and striking out four batters.
- Seven Norse combined for nine team hits on the day, while also drawing three walks.
- Campbell Beatty went 2-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored.
- Emma Ginn batted 2-3 with one run scored.
- Olivia Pastin and Brielle DiMemmo both went 1-3 with a single, a walk, and a run scored.

NORSE NOTES
- Ford allowed just one run in the bottom of the seventh with two out. Until that run came across, Ford had gone 18 total innings without allowing a run, a truly dominant performance from the freshman who hadn't thrown over five innings in a game heading into the weekend.
- NKU grabbed a first-inning lead thanks to a two-out walk from Pastin and a double from Stella Wulker to drive her in.
- The Norse put up four in the second, as NKU loaded the bases with a bunt single and a pair of walks. Beatty's double brought home two, then a bunt single from Jena Rhoads increased the Norse lead to four.

- After a pitching change, the Norse caught Detroit off guard with a double steal as Beatty took home for NKU's final run of the game.

- Ford coasted off fly balls and groundouts through three, but faced trouble in the fourth with one out and runners on second and third. In the high-leverage situation, the freshman fanned the next two batters to get out of the jam.

- After a one-two-three inning in the fifth, Detroit again put some runners on base in the sixth, getting runners on first and second with one gone. Stella Wulker played hero to save the shutout, beating the runner from second with an incredible throw from left field.
