Shaneyfelt stars, Norse ride nine-run sixth inning to big victory over Youngstown State

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Northern Kentucky baseball won a wild one on Thursday night, picking up a huge win over Youngstown State in the series opener of the final series of the regular season. 

Tyler Shaneyfelt starred for the Norse, who scored nine runs in the sixth inning to take the lead and pick up the win.

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN - PITCHING

  • Conner Linn got the start for the Norse and pitched to a no decision, striking out one over 1.1 innings. 
  • Kaden Echeman came in for him in relief, picking up the win after striking out seven batters over 4.2 innings. 
  • Logan Wilson was dominant over the final three innings, allowing just one baserunner while striking out three to pick up the save. 

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN - BATTING

  • Tyler Shaneyfelt was dominant, finishing 4-6 with a home run, three RBI, two stolen bases, and four runs scored. He led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run and terrorized the Penguins on the base paths with his pair of steals and heads up base running. 
  • Gabe Miranda homered as well, finishing 2-4 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. 
  • Jake Paulick notched a pair of hits and drove in three, stealing a base as well. 
  • Nolan Sparks finished 1-4 and stole a base in the win. 
  • Sam Bond drew a pair of walks and scored twice. 
  • Mark Nowak was hit by a pitch, scored a run and stole a base. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, the Norse put up four runs, as Shaneyfelt and Miranda both homered, Jake Paulick singled home a run and NKU executed a delayed double steal. 
  • Miranda tied the game at five in the second inning with an RBI single. 
  • In the sixth, NKU took the lead for good. The Norse played nine runs on two hits, three YSU errors, three walks and a pair of hit by pitches. 
  • From there, Logan Wilson came in and shut down the Penguins to secure the win. 

UP NEXT

  • The Norse look to pick up the series win on Friday, with first pitch set for 1 PM.
