Baseball dominates from start to finish to secure sweep of YSU on Senior Day

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Northern Kentucky baseball celebrated Senior Day in a big way on Saturday afternoon, as the Norse dominated from start to finish in a rout of Youngstown State. 

NKU scored in every inning, plating 11 runs in the second inning to blow the game open early.

  • Tyler Shaneyfelt dominated on his Senior Day, finishing 4-4 while reaching base six times. Shaneyfelt had an RBI, scored three times and stole three bases in the win. 
  • Gabe Miranda finished 205 with a pair of RBI. 
  • Braydon Rogers homered as part of a 2-6, four RBI day. 
  • Josh Williams hit two homers, notching three hits and five RBI. 
  • Sam Bond launched his first home run of the year in the win. 
  • Mark Nowak finished 2-3, hitting his first collegiate home run. He drew two walks as well. 
  • MJ Castaneda, normally a pitcher, started at third for the Norse and finished 2-4 with four RBI. He launched a three-run homer that gave NKU the lead. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • NKU scored on a passed ball in the first inning to open the scoring. 
  • In the second inning, NKU scored 11 runs, beginning with Castaneda's three-run homer. NKU hit two triples, two hoers, and three singles in the inning. 
  • Josh Williams homered for the first time in the third, and Mark Nowak launched a three run homer later in the inning to push the lead out to 16-2. 
  • Josh Williams' second homer in the fourth inning gave the Norse an 18-2 lead. 
  • Braydon Rogers put NKU in the 20s with a three-run shot in the fifth. 
  • NKU drew a pair of bases loaded walks in the sixth, and run ruled the Penguins in the seventh. 

UP NEXT

  • The Norse look to repeat history in Dayton next week, as NKU has captured the two-seed in the Horizon League Championships. The Norse will play their first game at the tournament on Thursday, with time and opponent TBD.
