Norse Baseball breaks skid with extra-inning win

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Northern Kentucky University Norse Baseball looked to even the series with a Saturday matchup against Milwaukee after taking an extra-innings loss in the opener.

Northern Kentucky's offense struck for four runs in the first, and a big day from starting pitcher Aaron Boster helped the Norse lead six-nothing after three innings. However, Milwaukee battled back and tied the game at six, mostly thanks to a five-run sixth inning.

The Norse pulled ahead in extra innings, going for four runs in the twelfth inning, highlighted by a two-run triple from Jake Paulick

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky - 10, Milwaukee - 6 (12 innings)
LOCATION: Franklin Field - Franklin, Wis.
RECORDS: Northern Kentucky: 25-20 (13-10 Horizon) | Milwaukee: 17-28 (12-10 Horizon)

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN - PITCHING
Aaron Boster threw 5.2 innings of one-run ball, shutting down the Panther offense as he allowed just one hit and struck out six batters. Boster was pulled after his pitch count hit 102 in the sixth.
Logan Wilson relieved Boster in the sixth, getting out the final batter of the inning, but loaded the bases to start the seventh before getting pulled.
Kaden Echeman came in for Wilson to try to help the Norse get out of the jam, but ended up allowing the tying run to cross in the inning, finishing with 1.2 innings, four strikeouts, and one earned run allowed.
Aaron Massie relieved Echeman in the eighth and pitched deep into extra innings, striking out three batters without allowing a hit over 3.1 innings of work. Massie picked up the win, improving to 4-1 on the year.
Ryan Pehrson came in for Massie in the twelfth and closed things out, striking out

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN - BATTING
Northern Kentucky's top three hitters combined for four doubles in the first three innings, with the Norse totaling 11 hits on the day.
Logen Devenport went 2-5 with two doubles, one RBI, and two runs scored.
Gabe Miranda went 2-6 with three RBI, three runs scored, and a double.
Tyler Shaneyfelt batted 2-6 with two runs scored and a double.
Josh Williams hit 2-6 with a pair of runs scored
Jake Paulick drove in three runs on the day, including a two-run triple in the twelfth, and walked three times.
Marcus Harrison finished 2-5 with an RBI and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Norse put up four runs in the first frame, as Shaneyfelt and Devenport led off the game with back-to-back ground-rule doubles. An RBI single from Miranda and RBI groundouts from Bond and Paulick increased NKU's lead to four.
In the third, Devenport and Miranda started off the same way the Norse did in the first, with back-to-back doubles to lead it off. A double-steal play at the end of the third saw Miranda come home, but Paulick got out in a pickle.
Aaron Boster didn't allow his first hit of the game until the fourth, when Milwaukee got on board to cut NKU's deficit to five with an RBI double.
Milwaukee's big seventh inning saw the Panthers load the bases with no outs. An RBI walk and a fielding error made it a 6-3 ballgame, but a bases-clearing double tied the game at six, where it stayed until the twelfth.
Aaron Massie came up big late, as he only allowed two baserunners as he threw the ninth, tenth, and eleventh innings without a threat of a Panther score.
Shaneyfelt led off the twelfth with a single, and he scored the lead-taking run as he beat the throw from second home on a fielder's choice. After a single from Williams, Paulick did some more damage with a triple deep in the left-center gap, scoring two. An RBI single from Harrison extended the lead to four, and Ryan Pehrson closed things out with a 1-2-3 final frame.
