Softball splits games with Western Illinois, Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky.  – Northern Kentucky University Norse softball took on Western Illinois and Bellarmine on Friday afternoon, as the Norse entered the day at 4-4 on the season. NKU stayed .500 on the year, falling to the Leathernecks but taking down the Knights in the nightcap.   

THE BASICS - GAME ONE
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 2, Western Illinois – 5

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
- It took awhile for either team to open the scoring, but the Norse did so in the fourth thanks to an RBI single from Brooke Keltner. The Leathernecks took the lead in the next half inning on a two-RBI double, before NKU tied it up in the fifth at two on an error. Western pulled ahead in the sixth, taking a five-two lead which proved too much for the Norse to overcome. 
- Peyton Mueller-Stenz led NKU offensively with a 3-3 day at the plate, including a double. 
- Brooke Keltner finished 1-2 with an RBI and a walk. s
- Makaree Chapman threw five innings, allowing four runs, nine hits, four walks, and five strikeouts. 
- Kyndall Ford relieved Chapman in the sixth, throwing two innings while allowing one hit and striking out three.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
- Bellarmine struck first with a solo homer off Alicia Flores in the first inning. The Norse tied it up in the second off a Lexy Morris RBI double, before Bellarmine snatched the lead right back in the bottom half of the frame. The Norse then scored five unanswered runs, with two coming in the third and three in the fifth. The Knights got one back in the bottom of the fifth before the Norse scored two more in the sixth, increasing their lead to a game-high five at 8-3. Bellarmine rallied in the sixth, scoring four runs, but fell just short to tie the game as NKU won 8-7.
- The Norse used all four pitchers in the game, as Alicia Flores got the start and the win, pitching four innings while allowing just two runs. Makaree Chapman got the save as she was the only Norse to not allow a run in the game. 
- Brooke Keltner led the way offensively, going 3-4 at the plate with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. She also stole a base.
- Lexy Morris had her best offensive game of the season, going 3-4 with two doubles, while plating one run. 
- Mack Brow finished 2-4 with a walk. 
- Brielle DiMemmo batted 1-3 with a run scored and a double. 

NEXT UP
NKU continues play in Louisville tomorrow, taking on the same two opponents at 2 PM and 4:30 PM.
