Softball clinches series victory over Oakland with Saturday doubleheader split

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University Norse softball wrapped up its first Horizon League series of the 2026 season on Saturday, taking on Oakland in a doubleheader. After beating the Golden Grizzlies 2-0 on Friday, the Norse claimed a series victory in the first game, winning 7-3, but failed to complete the sweep as they dropped the finale.

FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 7, Oakland – 3
LOCATION: Frank Ignatius Grein Field – Highland Heights, Ky.
RECORDS: NKU: 13-12 (2-0 HL) | OAK: 12-10 (0-2 HL)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Abigail Byrd pitched a complete game for the Norse, going seven innings, allowing three runs, four hits, and six walks while striking out nine batters. Her nine strikeouts tallied the most in a game by a pitcher for NKU since the 2024 season. 
- Brielle DiMemmo led NKU offensively with a pair of bombs, finishing 2-4 with three RBI. She leads the Norse with five home runs on the year. 
- Kenzie Gulley finished 3-4 at the plate with two runs scored, a double, and an RBI. 
- Jena Rhoads batted 1-2 with a triple, drawing a pair of walks and batting in a run. 
- Brooke Keltner homered in the game, her third of the season, finishing 1-3 at the plate.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Makaree Chapman started in the circle and pitched four innings of three-run ball, allowing four hits and one walk. Alicia Flores relieved her in the fifth and threw three scoreless frames, allowing a pair of hits and no walks while striking out four batters. 
- Peyton Mueller-Stenz and Jena Rhoads led the Norse with two hits apiece in game two. NKU's lone run of the contest came in the seventh, as Brielle DiMemmo's bases-loaded walk brought in Mack Brow.

Northern Kentucky finishes up the series with Oakland on Saturday with a doubleheader set for a noon first pitch.
