Softball splits Friday action at EKU Invitational

RICHMOND, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University Norse softball headed down to Richmond to start play in the EKU Invitational on Friday, taking on Delaware State and Miami University. The Norse run-ruled the Hornets in the opener, before falling to Miami 7-4.

THE BASICS – GAME ONE
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 8, Delaware State – 0
LOCATION: Gertrude Hood Field - Richmond, Ky.
RECORDS: NKU: 8-6 | DSU: 3-7

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Makaree Chapman got the start in the circle, and ended up having one of her finest performances of her young career, throwing a six-inning shutout while allowing just one hit. Chapman struck out three batters while walking three,  and also finished 1-2 at the plate. The freshman moved to 3-4 on the season and now boasts a 3.37 season ERA.
- The NKU offense finished 8-22 at the plate with five walks and four extra-base hits.
- Peyton Mueller-Stenz had a great first game, finishing 3-3 with a single, a double, and a triple, batting in a pair of runs while scoring twice.
- Mack Brow hit her first career home run in the game, finishing 1-3 with three RBI and a walk.
- Lexy Morris batted 1-2 with a two-RBI double, scoring once while walking once.

THE BASICS – GAME TWO
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 4, Miami (OH) – 7
LOCATION: Gertrude Hood Field - Richmond, Ky.
RECORDS: NKU: 8-7 | MU: 17-4

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Miami entered the contest winners of eleven straight, something the Norse threatened to end early, as NKU opened the scoring with three runs over the first two innings. The Redhawks tied things up on a three-run homer in the third and then took a four-run lead on a grand slam, giving them enough cushion to stave off the Norse.
- Alicia Flores got the start in the circle and allowed both of those homers. She finished her day, allowing eight baserunners and seven runs in 2.1 innings. Flores moved to 3-2 on the year with the loss.
- Abigail Byrd relieved Flores and threw 3.2 shutout innings, allowing four baserunners.
- The Norse offense finished with eight hits on 30 at-bats, but all of those hits came before NKU recorded its tenth out in the game.
- Makaree Chapman went 2-4 as the DP, with a homer, two RBI, and two runs scored.
- Mack Brow went 2-4 in game two with an RBI.
- Jena Rhoads went 2-4 with a run scored.
