Baseball drops series opener at Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Northern Kentucky University Norse baseball faced off with Milwaukee in the first of a three-game set on Thursday, as NKU looked to get back at the Panthers after dropping the series in Highland Heights just over a month ago. The Norse trailed for nearly the whole contest, but rallied late to tie the game and force extras, but fell in the 11th.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky - 5, Milwaukee - 6
LOCATION: Franklin Field – Franklin, Wis.
RECORDS: NKU: 16-20 | MKE: 10-24

GAME SUMMARY
– Milwaukee opened the scoring with a pair of runs on an RBI single in the first, then added to it with two more in the third. NKU went six scoreless before breaking through with two runs on Alex Brazer's seventh-inning double. Milwaukee got one back in the seventh on an RBI single, while Marcus Harrison collected his fourth hit of the day in the eighth, which made it 3-5. Mark Nowak drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the ninth before Jake Paulick's single moved him into scoring position, where he scored on a wild pitch. Josh Williams doubled to bring home Paulick and tie the game at five, and Gabe Stout survived a ninth-inning scare to send the game to extras. The Norse stranded a pair of runners in the tenth before grounding into a double play in the 11th for the fourth time in the game. A walk and a hit-by-pitch to lead off the bottom of the 11th put NKU in danger, and a single dropped into right-center saw the Panthers take game one by a score of 6-5.

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
– NKU threw just four pitchers over the 11-inning game, as Tannis Lange got the start, throwing four innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out three batters. Elijah Green relieved him for his second-straight great performance out of the bullpen, as he threw four innings, allowing one run while striking out three. Gabe Stout pitched the ninth & tenth while facing nine batters, and Jared Teke was saddled with the loss as he pitched the final frame. Teke moved to 2-1 on the season.
Marcus Harrison led an NKU offense that accrued 13 hits in 43 at-bats, as he singled in his first four at-bats, finishing 4-5 with a run, an RBI, and an intentional walk.
Jake Paulick was the only other Norse to record multiple hits, batting 2-4 with a double, a walk, and a run scored.
Josh Williams finished 1-5 with a double and a walk, scoring a run and driving in the game-tying run.
