Kevin Schappell

Kevin Schappell was hired as assistant coach at NKU prior to the start of the 2010-11 season. Schappell, a four-year letterwinner for NKU from 2003-07, spent three years as a graduate assistant at West Virginia University. The former Loveland High School standout also received his master’s degree from West Virginia.

Schappell oversees recruiting, scheduling and working with the NKU's guards. He has helped guide the Norse from a Division II power to a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference in NCAA DI.

In NKU's first season as a DI program, Schappell was instrumental in helping the Norse to an 11-16 (9-9 A-Sun) record while playing teams such as Ohio State, Texas Tech, San Francisco, Tulsa and San Diego. In year two, the Norse posted a 9-21 () mark that included road games at No. 1 Kentucky, No. 19 North Carolina and Purdue.

Northern Kentucky posted a 44-16 record in its final two seasons in Division II with Schappell assisting on the bench. The Norse reached the postseason both years, advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament in 2010-11.

Schappell was a member of the 2010 West Virginia coaching staff and helped the Mountaineers advance to the NCAA Division I Final Four. West Virginia earned berths in the NCAA Tournament each of Schappell’s three seasons as an assistant to head coach Bob Huggins.

While a player at NKU, Schappell scored 868 career points. He was named honorable mention All-Great Lakes Valley Conference during the 2005-06 season.

As a senior in 2006-07, Schappell played a key role during NKU’s run to the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region championship game. The Norse knocked off top-seeded Findlay in the regional semifinals of that tournament, ending the nation’s longest home winning streak at 59 consecutive games.

Kevin is married to the former Molly Roy, a 2008 graduate of NKU.
