Norse women defeat Kentucky Wesleyan, 71-55

OWENSBORO, Ky. - Jessie Slack scored 26 points and dished out four assists Sunday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team defeated Kentucky Wesleyan, 71-55, in the Owensboro Sportscenter.

Cassie Brannen added 19 points and six rebounds for NKU, which improved to 11-0 overall, 3-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse shot 56.3 percent from the field and avenged last season's 74-66 loss at Kentucky Wesleyan.

Slack, a senior guard from Mt. Perry, Ohio, poured in 21 points during the second half as NKU broke open a close game. The Norse used an 18-6 run to begin the second half to extend a 26-24 lead into a 44-30 advantage.

Slack finished 8-for-12 from the field and made all seven of her free-throw attempts. The 5-foot-10 guard is now 32-for-33 (97 percent) from the line this season and has scored in double figures in all 11 games.

Freshman forward Whitney Levering scored a career-high nine points and grabbed five rebounds for NKU. Levering made all three of her shots from the field and also added an assist in 16 minutes of action.

NKU's 11-0 start is the best since the 1987-88 season, when the Norse began the campaign 18-0.

The Norse travel to Evansville on Jan. 8 for a GLVC game at Southern Indiana.
