LANSING, Mich. – The Northern Kentucky University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Friday afternoon during the opening day of the Great Lakes Valley Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover.
NKU dropped a 25-17, 25-17, 25-27, 24-26, 15-12 decision to Wayne State (Mich.) in the opener. The Norse were later swept by Saginaw Valley State, 25-17, 30-28, 25-17. NKU is now 15-9 overall.
In the opener, NKU rallied from a two-set deficit against Wayne State to force a fifth stanza and held an 11-9 lead in the deciding set. Wayne State, however, used a 6-1 run to cap the fifth set and pulled out a 15-12 victory.
Noelle Peterson hammered down 17 kills to lead NKU, while
Kim Nemcek added 15 kills. The Norse hit .159 for the match, while Wayne State attacked at a .242 clip.
Chelsea Clark collected a match-leading 29 digs to pace the NKU defense, while Nemcek added 13 digs. Wayne State, however, finished with 12 blocks and eight service aces.
Jenna Schreiver finished with 51 assists for NKU, while
Kylee Tarantino added 10 digs and a pair of service aces.
In the second match, Saginaw Valley State hit .294 and cruised past NKU. The Cardinals used an 11-1 run in the third set - including 10 straight points after falling behind 16-14 - to capture the final stanza and wrap up the sweep.
Peterson recorded eight kills for NKU, which hit just .079 for the match.
NKU concludes the two-day event Saturday by meeting Hillsdale (Mich.) at 12:30 p.m. The Norse resume GLVC play next Friday with a road match at Saint Joseph's at 8 p.m.
