NKU begins GLVC play Thursday night with a game at Indianapolis.
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University men's basketball team opens up Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday night at 7:45 p.m. with a road game against Indianapolis in Nicoson Hall.
NKU is 4-2 after dropping a 40-38 decision at Gannon (Pa.) on Saturday at the Gary Miller Classic in Erie, Pa. The Norse began that two-day event by posting an 86-77 win against Edinboro on Friday night.
Indianapolis is 2-2 entering Thursday's GLVC opener. The Greyhounds lost at Urbana, 87-77, on Nov. 24 in their most recent game.
PALMER EARNS MVP: NKU senior center
David Palmer earned most valuable player honors at the Gary Miller Classic by averaging 20 points during the event. Palmer poured in a career-high 27 points against Edinboro, and followed that with 13 points against Gannon.
For the season, Palmer averages 17.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. He is also shooting 65 percent from the field.
ALL-TOURNEY: NKU junior guard
Dustin Maguire also earned all-tournament honors at the Gary Miller Classic. Maguire cored 21 points against Edinboro on Friday. Maguire averages 11.2 points per game and leads NKU with 13 3-point field goals.
RECORD LOW: The 38 points scored by NKU against Gannon were the fewest in Norse history. The previous mark for fewest points was 42 on three different occasions, the most recent in 2007 against Grand Valley State.
NKU tied a school record by limiting Gannon to 13 points in the first half. The Norse also held Kentucky State to 13 points in a half on Jan. 21, 1984.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST INDIANAPOLIS: On Feb. 7, 2009,
DeAaron Williams scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead NKU to an 80-67 win against Indianapolis in The Bank of Kentucky Center.
Dustin Maguire added 18 points for the Norse, who committed just three turnovers the entire game.
STREAK AGAINST INDY: NKU has won nine consecutive games against Indianapolis and owns a 33-27 lead in the all-time series. Indianapolis has not defeated NKU since Feb. 12, 2005, when the Greyhounds posted an 87-74 win over the Norse in Regents Hall.
USI ON SATURDAY: NKU visits Southern Indiana at 4:15 p.m. Saturday to conclude the two-game GLVC road trip. The Screaming Eagles are currently 4-0.
Southern Indiana holds a 44-17 lead in the all-time series with NKU. The Screaming Eagles have won nine of the last 10 games against the Norse, including an 83-78 decision last season at Evansville, Ind.
NKU's last road win against Southern Indiana occurred on March 9, 1996, in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional championship game by a 99-87 score. The Norse's last regular-season road win against the Screaming Eagles in the PAC Arena came on Dec. 10, 1994, when NKU pulled out a 96-90 victory against then-No. 1 Southern Indiana.
