HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The rematch instead turned into a mismatch Monday night when the Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team played host to nationally ranked Quincy in a Great Lakes Valley Conference showdown.
Casse Mogan and
Brandi Rayburn combined for 38 points and 15 rebounds as NKU upset 12th-ranked Quincy, 72-55, in The Bank of Kentucky Center. It marked the second straight win against the Lady Hawks for NKU, which also bested Quincy in last season's GLVC Tournament championship game by a 77-72 score at Quincy, Ill.
Mogan finished with 21 points and five rebounds for NKU, which improved to 8-4 overall, 2-2 in the GLVC. Rayburn scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Norse, who held Quincy to just 28.3 percent shooting from the field.
Sadie Bowling added 12 points and eight rebounds for NKU, which used an 11-2 run in the first half to build a 19-10 lead. Quincy made just 17.9 percent of its shots from the field in the first half and trailed 27-19 at the break.
Mogan, a sophomore guard who has scored in double figures in all 12 games this season, netted 12 points before the break. Rayburn scored 12 points in the second half and Bowling added 10 points after the break as NKU led by as many as 22 points (61-39).
The Norse finished with a 44-35 advantage on the boards and shot 41.8 percent from the field. NKU made 51.9 percent of its shots in the second half and was never threatened by the Lady Hawks. The Norse also blocked nine shots, with
Kendra Caldwell collecting three rejections.
Courtney Shuman led Quincy (10-2 overall, 2-2 GLVC) with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Hawks, who won 10 straight games to open the season, have now lost two in a row on the road by double-digit margins.
On Saturday, No. 4 Indianapolis handed Quincy an 80-52 setback.
A year ago in their only regular-season meeting, Quincy defeated NKU, 66-57, in The Bank of Kentucky Center. That is the only regular-season loss ever for the Norse women in the new facility.
NKU hits the road Thursday for a GLVC game at Missouri-St. Louis. The Norse conclude the road trip Saturday with a game at Rockhurst.
