No. 12 Hillsdale holds off NKU rally to post five-set victory at GLVC/GLIAC Crossover

AURORA, Ill. – Ashlee Crowder collected five of her match-high 17 kills in the fifth set Saturday as No. 12 Hillsdale (Mich.) College held off Northern Kentucky University, 25-13, 25-13, 23-25, 22-25, 15-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover tournament.

Hillsdale attacked at a .667 clip in the fifth set to extend its winning streak to 17 and improve to 18-1 overall. The Chargers also held NKU to a -.182 hitting percentage in the deciding fifth set to cap the victory. The Norse managed just one kill with three errors in the final set.

Shelby Buschur led NKU (15-10 overall) with 14 kills, while teammate Kelly Morrissey added eight kills and hit .444. Gennie Galfano finished with 10 kills for the Norse, who battled back from a two-set deficit to force a deciding fifth stanza.

Clara Leutheuser collected 16 kills and hit a blistering .583 for Hillsdale, which attacked at a .375 clip for the match. NKU finished with a .216 hitting percentage.

Sarah Drennen added eight kills and collected 10 digs for NKU, which finished with a 1-2 record at the two-day event. The Norse defeated Ashland in the opener Friday before losing to No. 25 Grand Valley State later in the day.

A year ago, NKU knocked off Hillsdale in four sets during the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover tournament. The Norse own a 4-2 lead against the Chargers in the all-time series.

NKU resumes GLVC play Tuesday night at 7 p.m. with a road match at Bellarmine. The Norse then return home and play host to Indianapolis at 7 p.m. Friday as part of the Dig Pink promotion in Regents Hall.
