NKU volleyball drops five-set thriller to UM-St. Louis in opening round of GLVC Tournament

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Shelby Crawford and Weslie Gaff each recorded 16 kills Friday night as Missouri-St. Louis rallied to defeat Northern Kentucky University, 23-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-23, 19-17, in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

Missouri-St. Louis staved off match point three times in the fifth set to pull out a 19-17 win and advance to the semifinals against top-seeded Lewis. The Tritons, ranked No. 25 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, improved to 20-7 and avenged a five-set loss to NKU in Regents Hall last week.

Sarah Drennen led NKU with 18 kills, while Gennie Galfano added 16 kills and a .484 hitting percentage. Kylee Tarantino recorded 18 digs for NKU, which dropped to 20-13. The Norse hit .272 for the match, while Missouri-St. Louis attacked at a .222 clip.

Noelle Peterson added 13 kills for NKU, while teammate Jenna Schreiver dished out 58 assists and finished with nine kills. Schreiver also had 13 digs.

NKU, which lost in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament for the fifth consecutive year, is ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division II Midwest Region poll.

Pairings for the NCAA Division II Tournament will be announced Sunday at 10 p.m.
