NKU women play host to Wayne State (Mich.) in key regional game Saturday at 2 p.m.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team plays host to Wayne State (Mich.) Saturday afternoon in The Bank of Kentucky Center at 2 p.m.

NKU is 3-2 after posting a 71-59 victory against Georgetown (Ky.) on Tuesday night. Wayne State enters Saturday winless (0-4) this season.

Wayne State is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, which competes with the Great Lakes Valley Conference for berths in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

WINSTEL MILESTONE: Nancy Winstel recorded her 600th career win as NKU's head coach Tuesday night with a 71-59 victory against Georgetown (Ky.).

Winstel now has 639 career victories, including 600 wins on the Norse sideline in 28 years. Her 639 victories are fourth all-time in NCAA Division II history. Winstel also picked up 39 wins in three seasons as the head coach at Midway (Ky.).

MIGHTY MO: Casse Mogan scored 21 points and collected four steals to lead NKU against Georgetown. Mogan, a junior guard from Circleville, Ohio, also added three blocked shots and four assists. Mogan now has 664 career points, which ranks 52nd in Norse history.

Mogan leads NKU in scoring at 16.0 points per game. She has scored in double figures the past four games. Mogan also leads NKU with 18 assists and 13 steals.

BLOCK PARTY: NKU finished with 10 blocked shots and held Georgetown to 33.3 percent shooting from the field to win its home opener Tuesday night. The Norse built a 21-point lead (47-26) in the second half and held off a late Georgetown rally.

HOLTON IN THE POST: NKU sophomore center Ellen Holton added 12 points against Georgetown. Holton netted 10 points and grabbed five rebounds in the first half as the Norse jumped out to a 32-19 lead at the break. Holton averages 7.8 points per game and is shooting 62.5 percent from the field.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR BOWLING:
NKU junior forward Sadie Bowling recorded a double-double against Georgetown with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She also added three assists and two steals. Bowling averages 11.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Bowling also leads NKU in 3-pointers made with 10.

DEFENSE WINS: NKU is holding opponents to 36.4 percent shooting from the field. The Norse also own a +6.2 rebound margin.

LOWDOWN ON NKU: The Norse are 3-1 when leading at halftime this season, and 0-1 when trailing at intermission. NKU has not allowed an opponent to shoot 50 percent from the field through the first five games.

THE LAST TIME AGAINST WAYNE STATE: On Nov. 28, 2009, Brooke Bowers scored 19 points as Wayne State (Mich.) defeated NKU for the first time in history with a 62-57 upset of the Norse.

Chelsea Davis added 10 points and nine rebounds for Wayne State, which improved to 1-9 all-time against NKU. The Warriors used an 18-2 run in the second half to rally from an 11-point deficit and held on to win.

Casse Mogan scored 11 points during the first half as NKU built a 25-20 lead at the break. Brandi Rayburn added nine points in the first half for the Norse. NKU owned a 39-28 lead with 14:13 remaining after a Whitney Levering basket, but Wayne State stormed back to take a 42-41 advantage on Bowers' layup with 8:15 left on the clock.

Ashara Maxie capped the Wayne State run with two straight baskets to give the Warriors a 46-41 lead. After NKU sliced Wayne State's lead to 52-49 with two minutes remaining on a Kelsey Simpson basket, Bowers countered by driving baseline and making a high-arching shot to extend the Warrior advantage to 54-49.

Mogan made a pair of free throws with 1:31 left to cut the Wayne State lead to 54-51, but Deanna Crumpton converted a short jumper with 1:09 remaining to seal the upset for the Warriors.

Mogan finished with 17 points, six steals and five rebounds, while Rayburn added 15 points and eight rebounds. Simpson scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Norse.

WAYNE STATE'S LAST VISIT TO NKU: On Nov. 20, 2008, NKU played its first regular-season game inside The Bank of Kentucky Center against Wayne State, and the Norse cruised to a 75-51 win against the Warriors. NKU used a 20-5 run early in the first half to take control and was never threatened by the visiting Warriors.

Jessie Slack led NKU with 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field. Slack also made all three of her 3-point attempts, including a trey at the 19:15 mark that was the first-ever Norse field goal in the new arena.

Casse Mogan scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half as the Norse took a 44-24 lead into the locker room. NKU limited Wayne State to 28.3 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle by a 49-27 margin. NKU's Kendra Caldwell finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

The NKU bench, led by Caldwell and Mogan, contributed 33 points and 22 rebounds. Cassie Brannen scored 12 points before fouling out after playing just 13 minutes. Karen Brackman dished out a team-leading four assists and grabbed five rebounds for the Norse, who shot 45.2 percent from the field.

GLVC SCHEDULE BEGINS THURSDAY NIGHT: NKU begins Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday when Southern Indiana visits The Bank of Kentucky Center for a 5:30 p.m. showdown. The Screaming Eagles swept both games from NKU last season.

NKU also plays host to GLVC East Division preseason favorite Indianapolis at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Indianapolis also won both games against NKU last season.
