HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -
Bobby Shannon scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Northern Kentucky University to a 96-59 win over Glenville State on Wednesday.
Shannon, a 6-foot-5 junior forward, was 8-for-10 from the field and added three steals as NKU improved to 8-2. The Norse shot 63.6 percent from the field and finished with a 36-22 rebounding advantage against the visiting Pioneers.
“Bobby was very active the entire game, and he did a great job finishing off shots,” NKU head coach
Dave Bezold said. “Our outside shooters were on target, and that opened up things for Bobby.”
Josh Tabb added 15 points for NKU, which was 12-for-23 from 3-point range.
Dennis Gagai made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points for the Norse, who held Glenville State (2-7) to 39.6 percent shooting from the field.
Leading 49-41 early in the second half, NKU used a 33-7 run to build an 82-48 advantage. The Norse held Glenville State scoreless for nearly seven minutes at one point during that spurt.
“We did a much better job in the second half defensively, and that allowed us to go on the big run,” Bezold said. “We let Glenville hit seven 3-pointers in the first half and that kept them in the game. They only made a couple of 3-pointers after halftime, and that helped us pull away like we did.”
Glenville State finished 9-for-22 from 3-point range. Justin Caldwell scored 20 points to lead the Pioneers. Wednesday's game marked the first meeting between NKU and Glenville State in men's basketball.
Malcolm Eleby added 12 points and seven assists for NKU, while
Erik Stenger scored 10 points and blocked three shots.
Corey Sorrell and
Jon Van Hoose each netted nine points off the bench for the Norse.
NKU resumes Great Lakes Valley Conference play Sunday with a road game at Quincy. The Norse are 1-1 in the GLVC.
