Kentucky Wesleyan men end six-year streak of futility against NKU with 80-60 victory

OWENSBORO, Ky. – Desmond Stephens and Willie Richardson combined for 40 points as Kentucky Wesleyan posted an 80-60 win against Northern Kentucky University on Saturday.

Stephens scored 21 points for Kentucky Wesleyan, which is ranked No. 8 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. Richardson added 19 points as the Panthers (25-3 overall, 14-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference) defeated NKU for the first time in six years.

NKU (13-12 overall, 6-10 GLVC) had defeated Kentucky Wesleyan 12 consecutive times going into Saturday's game. The Norse owned a 32-30 halftime lead Saturday after a Jon Van Hoose 3-pointer in the closing seconds, but Kentucky Wesleyan outscored NKU 50-28 in the second half.

David Palmer scored 15 points to lead the Norse, while Ethan Faulkner netted 11 points. Chris Knight added 10 points for NKU, which made 41.5 percent of its shots from the field. Tony Rack came off the bench and made a trio of 3-pointers and finished with nine points for the Norse.

NKU plays host to unbeaten Southern Indiana (23-0) Thursday night at 7:45 p.m. The Norse conclude the regular season Saturday by hosting Indianapolis at 7:45 p.m.

NKU begins GLVC Tournament play on Feb. 27.
