NKU completes run through gauntlet of nationally ranked teams with a pair of losses

TAMPA, Fla. – The Northern Kentucky University volleyball team completed its two-day run through a gauntlet of nationally ranked squads by dropping a pair of three-set decisions Saturday at the University of Tampa Classic.

NKU (0-4) began the day by falling to No. 13 Nebraska-Kearney, 25-17, 25-20, 25-18. The Norse then dropped a 25-18, 25-22, 25-16 decision to No. 3 Tampa.

On Friday, NKU lost to both No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul and No. 5 Central Missouri to begin the tournament.

Nebraska-Kearney hit .377 as a team and held NKU to a .144 attacking clip to pull out the victory on Saturday. Noelle Peterson led NKU with 12 kills and hit .360 for the match, while teammate Shelby Buschur added 11 kills. Kylee Tarantino collected 12 digs for the Norse.

Buschur finished with 12 kills in the loss to Tampa, while Tarantino led the defense with nine digs. The Norse attacked at a .262 clip, but Tampa hit .447 for the match and coasted to the win. NKU hit .583 in the second set and was within a point (22-21) late, but Tampa scored three of the final four points to close out the stanza.

NKU plays host to Mount St. Joseph in the home opener Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Regents Hall. The following night, NKU entertains Charleston (W.Va.) in Regents Hall at 7 p.m.
