NKU men enjoy record-setting defensive performance in 76-36 victory over Maryville

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University's defense enjoyed a record-setting performance during a 76-36 victory against Maryville on Thursday night.

NKU held Maryville to just 10 first-half points and coasted to the victory. The 10 points were the fewest ever scored in a half by an NKU opponent. Gannon and Kentucky State each shared the previous record of 13 points in a half against the Norse.

In addition, Maryville's 36 points were also the fewest ever allowed by NKU. The previous low-point total for an NKU opponent was 40 on three different occasions.

Bobby Shannon scored 15 points to lead NKU (12-3 overall, 5-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference) to its fourth consecutive win. The Norse held Maryville to just three field goals and 13 percent shooting in the first half en route to a 30-10 lead at the break.

NKU, in fact, owned a 24-2 lead with 3:51 remaining before halftime after Shannon buried a 3-pointer. Maryville, however, scored eight points during the final three minutes to reach double figures by the break.

Erik Stenger added 11 points, six rebounds, four blocks and five steals for NKU, and Corey Sorrell scored 10. Malcolm Eleby scored nine points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Norse, who finished with a 42-26 advantage on the boards.

Josh Tabb finished with nine points, while teammate Jon Van Hoose added eight points. Ethan Faulkner dished out four assists for NKU, which shot 46.3 percent from the field.

NKU hits the road for a GLVC game against Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday. NKU owns a 23-8 lead in the all-time series against Wisconsin-Parkside, but the Rangers pulled out a 62-61 win against the Norse last season in Highland Heights, Ky.

The Norse are 8-6 all-time in DeSimone Gymnasium. NKU won in its last visit to Somers, Wis., by a 75-57 score on Jan. 31, 2009.
