HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University plays host to the 30th annual John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic this weekend, and the Norse (1-0) will meet Lane (Tenn.) College in the first round Friday at 7:30 p.m.

NKU concludes the two-day event Saturday by facing Glenville State at 7:30 p.m. This year's event will be a round-robin classic, featuring six teams with predetermined opponents.

In other first-round games Friday, UC-Clermont takes on Glenville State at 3:30 p.m., followed by Christian Brothers meeting Shaw (N.C.) at 5:30 p.m.

Christian Brothers plays UC-Clermont at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by Shaw vs. Lane at 5:30 p.m.

NKU has never met Lane in men's basketball. The Norse are 1-0 all-time against Glenville State, with that being a 96-59 win over the Pioneers last season in The Bank of Kentucky Center.

LAST YEAR'S GRIFFIN CLASSIC: NKU defeated both Christian Brothers and Charleston (W.Va.) in last year's John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic. During NKU's 69-66 win over Charleston, Malcolm Eleby set a Norse single-game record by going 17-for-17 from the free-throw line and finished with 21 points. Eleby was named the most outstanding player for NKU after averaging 20 points per contest in the two-day event.

Dan Fleming owned the previous NKU single-game record of consecutive makes from the line with 15 against IPFW on Jan. 19, 1981.

BEZOLD'S HOUSE: The Norse are 13-1 in the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic under head coach Dave Bezold. NKU's only setback in the event since Bezold became head coach was a 66-53 loss to Findlay in 2007.

SEASON-OPENING WIN: NKU opened the game with a 38-8 run and cruised to a 106-58 victory over visiting UC-Clermont last Saturday. Given it was the 40th anniversary of the program's first-ever game, the Norse appropriately built a 40-point halftime lead (64-24) by shooting 61.1 percent from the field.

Jon Van Hoose led NKU with 17 points, going 5-for-8 from 3-point range. DeAndre Nealy added 16 points and nine rebounds in his Norse debut, while Stretch Watson finished with 14 points and nine boards.

Ethan Faulkner scored 13 points, dished out six assists and collected three steals, while teammate Jalen Billups finished with 11 points in his first collegiate game. The Norse finished the game shooting 52.9 percent from the field.
