RENSSELAER, Ind. – It took three overtimes and a record-setting performance by
Casse Mogan to get it done, but Northern Kentucky University found a way to pull out a road victory against Saint Joseph's.
Mogan scored a school-record 37 points as NKU opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 106-101 triple-overtime victory over Saint Joseph's on Thursday night. The senior guard also grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds and dished out six assists for NKU, which improved to 4-1 overall, 1-0 in the GLVC.
Mogan's 37 points eclipsed the previous NKU single-game record of 36, set by Peggy Vincent against Claflin (S.C.) on March 11, 1977. Before Thursday night, Mogan's previous career-high point total was 28 against Ashland on Dec. 30, 2009.
Ellen Holton added a career-high 23 points for the Norse, who watched Saint Joseph's send the game into the third overtime when Britney Cruse buried a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the score at 92-all.
Mogan and
Maria Bennett each scored five points in the third overtime for NKU, which is now 41-13 all-time against Saint Joseph's (3-3 overall, 0-1 GLVC). The Norse have won the past seven meetings with the Pumas.
NKU is 16-11 all-time against Saint Joseph's in the Scharf Fieldhouse.
Bennett and
Melody Doss each finished with 13 points, while
Sadie Bowling grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds and scored 11 points. The Norse finished with a whopping 55-25 advantage on the glass, but 27 NKU turnovers helped keep Saint Joseph's in the game.
Montrell Mills scored 24 points to lead Saint Joseph's. Mills also forced the second overtime after drawing a foul from
Jaimie Hamlet while attempting a 3-pointer in the final seconds and sinking three free throws.
It marked the second-highest combined point total in Norse women's basketball history. On Feb. 27, 1988, Saint Joseph's outlasted NKU in five overtimes, 131-130, also in the Scharf Fieldhouse.
NKU and Saint Joseph's also played a triple-overtime game on Jan. 20, 1994, and the Norse escaped with a 104-101 win in Regents Hall.
NKU continues the road trip Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. showdown at Indianapolis.
