ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's basketball team opened the second overtime with a 13-3 run and held on for a 67-60 victory against Northern Kentucky University on Friday night.
Fareedah Washington scored seven points in the second overtime to spark Missouri S&T, which improved to 16-5 overall, 10-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Washington finished with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Hailee Parks and Julie Meyer each finished with 15 points for the Lady Miners, who are now 2-9 all-time against NKU. Missouri S&T's only other win against NKU came on Jan. 26, 2008, when the Lady Miners rolled to a 66-42 victory against the Norse.
With NKU trailing by three points late in regulation,
Ellen Holton made a 3-pointer with 12.6 seconds remaining to tie the game at 48-all. Missouri S&T had the final possession, but the Lady Miners were unable to get off a shot before the buzzer.
Casse Mogan, who scored 27 points to lead NKU (14-7 overall, 8-5 GLVC), made a pair of free throws with 11.4 seconds left in the first overtime to tie the game at 54-all. Missouri S&T missed a chance to win, forcing a second overtime.
The Lady Miners controlled the second overtime and jumped out to a 67-57 lead after a 3–pointer by Toni Knar with 1:42 left. Earlier in the period, Courtney Kemp buried a 3-pointer to give Missouri S&T a 59-55 cushion.
Missouri S&T led by as many as 11 points in the first half before setting for a 26-19 edge at intermission. Parks scored nine points in the first half to spark the Lady Miners. Holton netted eight points in the first half to keep NKU in contention.
Holton finished with 17 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots for the Norse, who have lost four consecutive road games in GLVC play. Mogan was 11-for-21 from the field and upped her career total to 954 points, and she is now 29th on the NKU all-time scoring list.
NKU concludes the trip Sunday with a 1 p.m. GLVC game against defending GLVC champion Drury in Springfield, Mo.
