ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - A battle between nationally ranked volleyball teams took place inside Neil Carey Arena on Saturday when No. 12 Northern Kentucky University visited No. 22 Lewis.
Less than 24 hours after being upset at Wisconsin-Parkside, NKU suffered its second straight loss during a 25-21, 26-28, 25-19, 25-19 defeat at Lewis. The Norse dropped to 10-2 overall, 5-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Lewis, which has beaten NKU the last three meetings, is 8-4 overall, 4-3 in the GLVC. The Flyers limited the Norse to a .192 hitting percentage for the match. NKU entered this weekend ranked No. 2 nationally in the Division II statistics with a .348 hitting percentage.
Jen Krumwiede led Lewis with 20 kills and attacked at a .450 clip. The Flyers pulled out the first set by a 25-21 margin, and they jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the second frame.
NKU, however, battled from behind and evened the match at a set apiece with a 28-26 win. The Norse's
Kim Nemcek accounted for the final two points of the set with consecutive kills.
Lewis responded by taking the final two sets by identical 25-19 scores. The Flyers hit .323 in the final set and held NKU to a .143 hitting percentage.
Nemcek led NKU with 19 kills and a .533 hitting percentage. The senior middle hitter also upped her career kills total at NKU to 938.
Sarah Drennen added 14 kills and attacked at a .281 clip for the Norse.
Kylee Tarantino finished with 17 digs, while teammate
Anna Prickel added 13 digs. Lewis hit .293 as a team en route to the victory.
NKU plays a non-conference match at Cedarville on Wednesday night. The Norse resume GLVC play next Saturday at 5 p.m. when Drury visits Regents Hall.
