HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – In her next-to-last appearance in Regents Hall,
Jenna Schreiver became Northern Kentucky University's all-time leader in career assists as the Norse swept past Mercer on Friday night.
Schreiver collected 36 assists and directed the NKU offense to a .316 hitting percentage during a 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 victory over the visiting Bears. She also passed Molly Donovan as the Norse's all-time assists leader early in the third frame when
Shelby Buschur hammered down a kill off a perfectly placed set.
It gave Schreiver 4,972 career assists and elevated her to No. 1 in school history in that category. Donovan, a Notre Dame Academy graduate just like Schreiver, had owned the NKU record since 1998 with 4,971 assists.
“I'm very excited. I couldn't have done it without all my teammates these past four years, and I just want to thank everybody,” Schreiver said of the record.
Schreiver – now 17 shy of becoming the first NKU player to record 5,000 assists in a career - also collected 14 digs as NKU improved to 22-7 overall, 9-6 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Mercer dropped to 9-16 overall, 5-10 in the A-Sun.
“I thought we played really well tonight,” NKU head coach
Liz Hart said. “We did a great job offensively. It's exciting to see Jenna become the all-time career assists leader.”
Buschur slammed down 13 kills and hit .588 for the match.
Haley Lippert finished with a match-high 16 kills and attacked at a .440 clip. In addition,
Jenna Ruble contributed seven kills and hit .333.
NKU's defense held Mercer to a .165 hitting percentage.
Kylee Tarantino led the back row with 15 digs, while
Kelly Morrissey finished with 11 digs. The Norse are now 2-0 all-time against Mercer, having also swept the Bears in Macon, Ga., earlier this season.
Six NKU seniors – Buschur, Schreiver, Morrissey, Lippert, Tarantino and
Gennie Galfano - will be honored Saturday prior to the home finale against Kennesaw State at 3 p.m. The Norse close out their first season as a Division I member next weekend with matches at Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast.
“It's going to be an emotional day. Its good and exciting to see them move on," Hart said. "They're great kids, both academically and athletically, so we're going to be missing them, but I'm excited for them and looking forward to seeing all the things they'll do.”
