HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team begins play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at 9:30 p.m. (Eastern time) Thursday in Springfield, Ill.
NKU (21-5 overall) is the No. 4 seed and earned a first-round bye. The Norse will meet Maryville (16-11) in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals at the Prairie Capital Convention Center. Maryville defeated Missouri-St. Louis, 75-61, in the first round on Sunday.
The NKU/Maryville winner plays either top-seeded Quincy or Lewis in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The championship game is set for Sunday at 2 p.m.
THE SERIES: NKU owns a 2-0 lead in the all-time series with Maryville. The teams did not play this season. The Saints are in their third season in the GLVC.
STREAKING: NKU won five consecutive games to end the regular season. The Norse coasted to a 74-53 win over Bellarmine on Feb. 23 in The Bank of Kentucky Center. That marked the final regular-season GLVC game for NKU, which is reclassifying to Division I in 2012-13.
NKU, which started competing in the GLVC during the 1985-86 campaign, finished with a 385-112 (.775) all-time record in regular-season conference play. Norse head coach Nancy Winstel has been on the sidelines for all 385 GLVC victories.
GLVC TOURNAMENT HISTORY: NKU owns a 23-10 all-time record in the GLVC Tournament, and the Norse have won four GLVC Tournament championships (1999, 2000, '06 and '09). NKU won each of its first three GLVC Tournament titles in Roberts Stadium in Evansville, Ind. The Norse captured the 2009 GLVC Tournament title at Quincy, Ill.
A year ago, NKU finished 1-1 in GLVC Tournament play. The Norse defeated Kentucky Wesleyan on the road in the first round before being eliminated by Indianapolis in the quarterfinals.
MIGHTY MO: NKU senior guard
Casse Mogan enters the GLVC Tournament having scored 1,536 points, which is fourth in school history. Mogan averages 17.4 points per game, which is No. 3 in the GLVC.
In addition, Mogan leads the team in assists (82) and steals (62). The native of Circleville, Ohio, is shooting 50.5 percent from the field, 83.6 percent from the free-throw line and also averages 5.4 rebounds per game. Mogan has scored in double figures 24 times this season, including a school-record 37 points against Saint Joseph's on Dec. 1.
Mogan is looking to become the first player in Norse history to score 1,500 points, grab 500 rebounds, dish out 250 assists, record 200 steals and block 50 shots in a career. Mogan enters the GLVC Tournament with 246 assists and 193 steals in her career. She has already grabbed 517 career rebounds and has 55 blocks.
SIMPSON SPARKLES: NKU junior forward
Kelsey Simpson scored a career-high 18 points in the win over Bellarmine. Simpson was 9-for-11 from the field and also added four blocked shots in that victory.
Simpson is one of seven NKU players with at least 10 blocks this season, helping the Norse rank No. 1 in the GLVC in that category (5.38 bpg). Simpson and
Ellen Holton each have 25 rejections to lead the team.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST MARYVILLE: On Jan. 13, 2011,
Jaimie Hamlet scored a career-high 19 points as NKU posted a 65-34 win against Maryville in The Bank of Kentucky Center. Hamlet finished 7-for-10 from the field, including five 3-pointers. She buried all four of her 3-point attempts for 12 points in the first half as NKU built a 26-15 lead and cruised to the win.
NKU held Maryville to 21.7 percent shooting from the field. The Norse won the rebounding battle by a 47-30 margin and forced 21 turnovers by the Saints.
The only other meeting between the two programs occurred on Jan. 18, 2010, and NKU pulled out a 66-53 victory at Maryville.
NCAA BRACKET ANNOUNCED SUNDAY: The NCAA Division II Tournament bracket will be announced Sunday night. The GLVC Tournament winner receives an automatic berth in the event. Ashland (25-1) is expected to be the top seed and host for the Midwest Regional, which will be played March 9-12.
NKU was sixth in last week's poll. The GLVC and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament winners receive automatic berths, and six at-large teams will also be selected for the Midwest Regional.
