EVANSVILLE, Ind. –
Cody Cooper and
Brett Loeding combined on a three-hit shutout Thursday as Northern Kentucky University opened the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a 6-0 win over Drury.
Cooper (5-2) scattered three hits, struck out three and walked just one in seven innings. Loeding took over in the eighth and pitched two perfect innings with four strikeouts.
Phil Smith smashed a solo home run for the Norse, who improved to 33-18 overall.
Zac Asman, Kris Hector and
Brandon Wood all collected two hits for NKU.
The second-seeded Norse recorded six stolen bases in the victory, with
Pat Williams swiping a pair. Leading 2-0 after four innings, NKU scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth to seal the win.
Drury, the No. 7 seed in the GLVC Tournament, dropped to 29-21.
NKU plays Missouri-St. Louis on Friday at noon. The Norse have won GLVC Tournament championships in 2002, '04, '06, '08 and '09.
