LEXINGTON, Ky. – Taking on their second nationally ranked opponent of the season, the Northern Kentucky University men's tennis team suffered a 6-0 defeat at No. 27 Kentucky on Saturday afternoon.
Mate Virag and
Jody Maginley each picked up set wins in singles play with Virag taking Set 1 from Jerry Lopez, 6-3, before the Wildcats' top player came back in the final two sets, 6-2, 6-2. Maginley's opening set was a 6-1 win before William Bushaka came back to take the No. 3 singles match, 6-1, 6-0.
Christopher Angulo faced his first nationally ranked singles opponent in UK's Beck Pennington, who is ranked No. 106 in Division I by the ITA, in the No. 2 singles flight. Pennington took the match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
With the loss, NKU fell to 1-3 on the season, while Kentucky improved to 4-6.
The Norse will take a week off before hitting the road for a pair of matches at Eastern Kentucky. NKU will take on the Colonels on Friday, Feb. 27, before facing Samford the following day.
