DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Northern Kentucky University men's tennis team picked up its fourth win in its last five matches with a 4-2 decision at Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday afternoon.
Jody Maginley and
Nick Lang improved their doubles record to 3-2 with an 8-2 win over B-C's Alvaro Barrera and Pablo Lopez at the No. 3 flight, however, Bethune-Cookman claimed the doubles point with wins in the other two flights. The difference came in the No. 2 match, where Diego Garavito and Greg Almeida took an 8-6 win over
Christopher Angulo and
Adrian Isache.
In singles action the Norse picked up a pair of decisive victories at No. 2 and No. 3, as Maginley bested Almeida, 6-2, 6-1, while Angulo defeated Barrera, 6-2, 6-2. Garavito got a point back for the Wildcats (11-10) with a 6-2, 6-4 win over
Jack Carney at No. 4 to even the match at 2-2.
Balint Zsidai followed up a hard-fought 7-5 win in his opening set against Lopez with a 6-0 win to clean up the No. 6 flight and Isache claimed a win on retirement, down a set but leading 3-1 in the second against Kevin Deligny at No. 5, to seal the match for the Norse.
In the top-flight singles match,
Mate Virag and Walid Gtari each claimed a set win before abandoning their match with the team event decided.
The win pushed NKU to 5-6 on the season entering a key weekend of Atlantic Sun Conference action. The Norse will look to ride their momentum into tomorrow's match against Stetson, which begins at 4 p.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center in DeLand, Florida.
