HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University men's tennis team lost a close battle against regional competition on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 4-3 decision to Wright State at the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex.
Christopher Angulo picked up his team-leading 10
th singles victory, while
Mate Virag and
Jody Maginley also took victories in singles play as the Norse fell to 5-9 on the season.
Both Wright State doubles victories came by 8-6 margins as Dan Gilbert and Simon Cote' defeated
Adrian Isache and Angulo at No. 2, while Lauri Makikalli and Andrew Connolly topped
Jack Carney and
Nick Lang at No. 3. Virag and Maginley teamed in the top flight to defeat Mason Bourbon and Myles Harris, 8-2, securing their second victory on the season as a team.
NKU's wins came at the top of the singles ladder as Virag's top-flight match against Makikalli ended in a 10-6 super tiebreaker victory for the Norse sophomore. Angulo went over Gilbert, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2, while Maginley topped Cote', 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3.
Wright State got its edge in the bottom half of singles play as Jose Pestana, Connolly and Harris each got wins to close out the victory for the Raiders, who improved to 9-13 on the year with the win.
NKU now turns its attention to Atlantic Sun Conference play as Kennesaw State comes to town on Thursday. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
