HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University men's and women's tennis teams welcome Tennessee State on Saturday, Feb. 20 for a 4 p.m. match at Five Seasons Sports Club in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
The match will serve as the first home contest for the women's team, who is 2-4 on the year and 0-1 in Horizon League play.
The men's squad is 1-1 having last competed on Feb. 6 against Findlay at home after falling to Kentucky to open the spring season.
On the women's side, transfer
Klara Skopac is off to a strong start in her first year as a Norse with five victories dating back to the fall. The junior boasts a 3-2 record at No. 1 singles this spring.
Meanwhile, the duo of Skopac and
Danielle Donahue won back-to-back matches last weekend at the No. 1 doubles flight after taking down South Dakota and Bradley. However, an injury-plagued Norse squad was unable to close out team victories.
Also seeing success on the women's side is junior
Sydney Power who has a trio of singles wins and is coming off a tie-breaker victory at Bradley. Power has paired up with
Sierra Nellessen for doubles wins over Bowling Green and Louisville, and cruised to a 6-1 victory with
Nicole Soutar last weekend at South Dakota.
On the men's side, the Norse look to carry momentum over from a 7-0 victory against Findlay. Including fall matches, NKU's lone senior
Jody Maginley has collected five singles wins and took on a nationally-ranked opponent at Kentucky to open the spring campaign.
Junior
Mate Virag also dove into the season, taking on ranked competition at UK before defeating Findlay's John Kidd 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
Following Saturday's match, both teams will travel across the Ohio River to take on Xavier on Friday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. The match opens a string of seven road matches for the women while the men embark on an eight-match road swing.
