Alina Maher slugged the first triple of the season for the Northern Kentucky University softball team, which dropped a tough 4-2 decision to Evansville after taking a loss to Miami (Ohio) on Day 2 of the Frost Classic, hosted by Chattanooga.
Zahrya McFarland spread two hits across the two games and picked up her first career stolen base as the Norse fell to 1-8 on the year.
Miami (Ohio) 14, NKU 1 (6 innings) Taylor Shuey went 3-for-5 with a four RBIs to lead the RedHawks in the early game. Shuey's RBI double in the top of the first inning cracked the scoring open, and her two-run homer in the third provided all the margin Miami (4-3) would need in the contest.
Kara Meter drove in NKU's only run on the game in the fourth inning, lacing a single through the right side to plate Maher, who tripled on a 2-0 pitch earlier in the inning.
Carley Mortensen (1-0) struck out five batters over four inninigs to claim the win for Miami. The loss fell to
Charlie Nolen (1-3), who went 3.2 innings in the start, surrendering four earned runs and striking out two.
Evansville 4, NKU 2 Susan Norris's pinch-hit three-run double in the sixth inning proved to be the game-winner as Evansville (10-4) claimed a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
Devlin went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Norse, who collected seven hits on the game.
The first of Courtney Land's two hits opened the scoring for Evansville in the bottom of the first inning, as Land doubled to the wall in left field to score Bailee Bostic, who walked earlier in the inning.
Sydney Ferrante slapped an RBI-single up the middle to tie things up in the second inning. The Norse later went ahead after McFarland stroked a two-out single up the middle and stole second base before Devlin won a nine-pitch battle, lacing another single up the box to plate the freshman centerfielder and give NKU a 2-1 lead.
Morgan Florey (5-0) picked up her second win in as many weeks against the Norse, both in relief. Florey gave up one hit and struck out six batters in three innings for the victory.
Ashlynn Roberts (0-3) took the loss in the circle for NKU in a complete-game effort.
The Norse will wrap up play in the Frost Classic on Sunday, taking on the host Chattanooga. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., with links to live stats and video available at NKUNorse.com.
