@NKUNorseSB defeats Quinnipiac to close Florida swing

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Jordan Harbacek struck out six batters and allowed just five hits to send the Northern Kentucky University softball team home with a 4-2 win over Quinnipiac to close out the Under Armour Showcase, hosted by USF.

Harbacek did not walk a batter in her complete-game effort, improving her record in the circle to 4-3 and bringing the Norse to 7-15 on the season.

Dani Edmands got the scoring started for the Bobcats (5-9) in the first inning with a solo home run, the first of her two RBIs on the day. Edmands also had a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to account for Quinnipiac's other run.

The Norse scored a pair of runs in the second inning to take the lead for good. Dani Devlin led the inning off with a single and Kara Meter reached on an error before Paige McQueen sacrificed herself to put both in scoring position.

Zahrya McFarland's squeeze bunt effort was successful to score Devlin and put McFarland on base as well on the fielder's choice, and an RBI groundout by Nicolette Hayes scored Meter to make it a 2-1 game.

An RBI double by Sydney Ferrante in the fourth and a run-scoring single by Meter in the fifth rounded out NKU's scoring.

Sydney Robey (3-4) took the loss in the circle for Quinnipiac, giving up three runs on two hits, striking out three and walking three in four innings.

NKU now returns home to the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field to open the home half of the 2016 season on Wednesday, as the Norse welcome in Dayton for a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
