ROCHESTER, Mich. – Northern Kentucky baseball starter
Tyler Miller tossed a complete game on Friday afternoon, but Oakland posted a 4-3 walk-off win in game one of a doubleheader. The Golden Grizzlies went on to take game two, 5-3, despite a 4-for-4, one RBI performance from
Trey Ganns at Oakland Baseball Field.
NKU dips to 15-24 overall and 4-13 in the Horizon League while Oakland improves to 16-13 and 7-4 in HL play.
The Norse return to action on Sunday when they host a doubleheader against Wright State at Bill Aker Baseball Complex. Both games are set to air on ESPN3. First pitch is at noon.
Game One (Oakland 4, Northern Kentucky 3)
In game one, Miller tossed 150 pitches en route to posting the second complete game of his career. The right-hander gave up 10 hits and four runs and struck out three in 8.2 innings.
Back-to-back two-out singles in the bottom of the ninth inning handed Oakland the 4-3 walk-off win. Tyler Pagano drove in Mike Brosseau for the game-winning run.
NKU led twice in the contest, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when three-straight singles from
Ty Amann,
Quint Heady and
Dominic Mercurio combined to push
Trey Ganns across the plate.
The lead would not last as an Oakland run scored in the bottom of the inning on a doubleplay for a 1-1 tie.
Each team scored again in the top of the fifth. NKU plated runs on a
Tito Montgomery sacrifice fly and a
Logan Spurlin RBI single, but Oakland again came back to tie it
when Brosseau belted a two-run homer for a 3-3 tie that lasted until the bottom of the ninth.
Game Two (Oakland 5, NKU 3)
In game two, Ganns posted four of NKU's nine total hits with
Brad Bohlen going 2-for-4 while Spurlin added an RBI.
The Norse got behind, 4-0, early when Oakland posted a five-hit third inning, giving the Golden Grizzlies enough insurance for the win.
Seth Rosenberg took to the mound in the fourth and twirled 4.1 innings, holding the Golden Grizzlies to five hits and one run. Rosenberg struck out three and walked none.
The Norse struggled to string hits together against Oakland starter Jake Lee who threw 7.1 innings.
NKU broke through the Oakland pitching in the top of the eighth when the Norse plated three runs to cut the deficit to 4-3. Spurlin drove in a run on a fielder's choice, followed by an RBI double from Ganns.
The only run Oakland managed against Rosenberg was on an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth for the 5-3 result.
