CHICAGO – The Northern Kentucky University men's tennis teams captured victories from Mate Virag and Jody Maginley at No. 1 and No. 2 singles on Sunday evening, but the Norse fell 4-2, at UIC.
At the No. 2 flight, Maginley earned NKU's first point of the match to keep the Norse in the hunt. The senior bested Christopher Cole in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to go 2-0 this weekend.
Mate Virag followed with a top-flight victory over Carl Hedstrom, 6-1, 6-4, to put the match score at 3-2.
However, UIC closed out a No. 6 singles victory as Blaine Carr took Nate Campanile into three sets for a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 result.
The Flames clinched the match with Court Clark playing into a third set at No. 4 singles of a match that was then abandoned.
Despite UIC earning the doubles point, Maginley and partner Nick Lang captured a 7-5 victory at No. 1 doubles.
The match concluded a seven-match road swing for the Norse. They return home to host Tiffin on Thursday, April 7 at 1 p.m. at the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex.
