@NKUNorseVB doubles up in Bloomington with a pair of wins

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Northern Kentucky volleyball went 2-0 on Saturday to close out the Indiana Invitational. The Norse first took down Marshall in four sets, 26-24, 28-26, 29-31, 25-19, before sweeping Evansville, 25-17, 25-13, 25-16. NKU advanced to 2-1 on the new season.
 
Following the conclusion of the tournament, senior middle blocker Keely Creamer and redshirt-senior Taylor Snyder were named to the all-tournament team.

First Set Summary
  • Marshall at one point held a seven-point advantage, with NKU trailing 20-13 before sophomore outside hitter Haley Libs put two away and the Thundering Herd had six errors within the next nine points.
  • NKU took the lead at 25-24 and secured the opening set win, 26-24.
  • Libs had six kills in the first set, while freshman outside hitter Laura Crawford had four. The Norse hit .278 as a team.
 
Second Set Summary
  • NKU once again had a come-from-behind win in the second set, down 12-6 before slowly closing the gap. The Norse faced four set points before securing a 28-26 set win.
  • Creamer led the offense in the second set, with seven kills on nine attempts along with a block. Libs added six more.
  • The second set was the best offensively, with a .314 hitting percentage.
 
Third Set Summary
  • NKU took the lead in the third, at one point at a 20-12 advantage over Marshall. However, the Thundering Herd duplicated what NKU had accomplished in the previous sets and came back to force set point. Marshall won the third set, 31-29.
  • Libs continued to pace the team with five kills and also added four digs. Junior middle blocker Georgia Childers had one solo block and two block assists to go with two kills on three attempts.
 
Fourth Set Summary
  • The fourth set went back-and-forth throughout the majority of the frame, with NKU pulling away at 17-17. The Norse held on for the victory and secured the match in the fourth, 25-19.
 
Norse Notes
  • NKU hit .232 as a team, holding Marshall to a .165 clip. Libs led the team with 19 kills at a .316 percentage, while Creamer had 13 kills and hit .370. Creamer also added five block assists.
  • The NKU net was strong with 13 blocks compared to Marshall's 7. Childers had a career-high in blocks with two solo blocks and six assists.
  • Senior libero Lauren Hurley set a new career high to lead the Norse defense with 22 digs. Overall NKU out-dug Marshall, 58-47.
  • Snyder had her first double-double of the season and 49th of her career with 41 assists and 13 digs. She also added six kills and five block assists.
  • The match featured aggressive serving on both sides, with Marshall registering 12 aces while NKU had seven.

First Set Summary
  • The two teams traded points for the first few plays, but NKU ultimately secured a 25-17 win in the opening set. Creamer led the team with four kills on eight attacks and also added a block.
  • The Norse had solid defense all around with four players recording a pair of digs apiece.
  • NKU hit a blistering .370, committing just three hitting errors on 27 attempts.
 
Second Set Summary
  • Creamer led the Norse once more with five kills on seven attempts and four rejections at the net, while sophomore Libs added five as well.
  • The second frame was the most efficient for the Norse, who hit .387 behind 17 kills en route to a 25-13 win.

  • The Norse sealed the sweep with a 25-16 win in the third set.
  • Freshman outside hitter Laura Crawford paced the offense in the third set, racking up four kills on seven attempts along with two blocks, while Libs and Creamer added three kills apiece.
  • The final set showed impressive work in the back row, with Hurley picking up six of NKU's 16 digs.
 
Norse Notes
  • The Norse hit .333 for the match and held Evansville to just .079. It marked the first time since Oct. 17, 2015 against Wright State that the Norse had held an opponent to under .100.
  • Creamer had a match-high 12 kills with no errors on 20 attempts, good for a career-high .600 hitting percentage. Creamer is the first Norse to hit at least .600 on 20 attempts since Jenna Ruble hit .652 against Jacksonville on Oct. 11, 2014. Creamer also added five blocks.
  • Libs added nine kills, while freshman outside hitter Laura Crawford tied her career high set earlier with seven kills at a .500 clip.
  • Snyder dished out 34 assists while scooping up eight digs and throwing down five kills.
  • Hurley led the defense with nine digs.

  • The Norse remain on the road and will play a one-day tournament in Bowling Green, Ohio, on Saturday, Sept. 3. NKU will play IPFW at 12:30 p.m. ET, followed by a 5 p.m. match against Bowling Green.
