LEXINGTON, Ky. – Northern Kentucky's men's tennis team took on one of the top teams in the nation on Sunday evening, falling to No. 15 Kentucky in a 4-0 decision. With the setback, NKU falls to 1-2 on the season while the Wildcats advance to 7-2.
Match Notables
- Kentucky took the opening point with wins in No. 2 and 3 doubles. Trey Yates and Ryotaro Matsumura secured a 6-2 win in No. 2 doubles over Court Clark and Nick Lang before Cesar Bourgois and Gus Benson clinched the opening point with a 6-3 win over Javier Araya and Adrian Isache in No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 match went unfinished, but Mate Virag and Lukas Clemens had built a 4-3 lead over the No. 23 pairing in the nation of Beck Pennington and Enzo Wallart.
- The Wildcats used wins in No. 1, 2 and 4 singles to clinch the win over the Norse.
- Virag pushed extra games in the opening set against No. 17 Matsumura in the No. 1 slot, ultimately falling to the national champion of the 2016 Oracle/ITA Masters, 7-5. Matsumura went on to win the second set to seal the match, 6-3.
- Clemens took on Pennington in No. 2 singles, falling to the Wildcat in 6-1, 6-4 sets.
- Clark fell to Bourgois in No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
- Araya was the only Norse to secure a set win over a Wildcat, taking the second set against No. 110 Trey Yates in No. 3 singles, 7-6(6). The singles match was halted before the tiebreak set could start, as Kentucky finished the third singles matchup necessary to clinch the team victory prior to the start of Araya's third set.
- NKU will host Dayton on Friday, Feb. 10 for its next match. First serve against the Flyers is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
