Providence edges out @NKUNorseWBB in final seconds

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Northern Kentucky women's basketball dropped a hard-fought contest to host Providence in its second game of the Friar Holiday Classic. NKU dips to 1-8 overall while the Friars move on to 7-4.
 
STAT LEADERS
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • NKU had a hot start to the game, going on a 5-0 run to kick off scoring. The Norse led at the end of the first quarter, 19-11, thanks to 46.7 percent shooting from the field and 60.0 percent from 3-point range.
  • Glick drained two triples in the first period, and was 3-for-3 from the field with eight points.
  • The Norse carried over its offensive efficiency into the start of the second quarter, but were held scoreless for the final 5:49 of the stanza. During that time, Providence went on a 7-0 run to tie the contest up at 26-26 at halftime.
  • NKU committed five turnovers in the second quarter, compared to none for the Friars.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • The Friars outscored the Norse 11-8 in the third quarter to hold a slight lead going into the final quarter.
  • NKU tied the contest up at 40-40 off a layup from Jazmyne Geist, and again at 43-43 thanks to a layup from Coffey. Providence used a late basket down low to take a 45-43 lead with 1.9 seconds remaining, resulting in a timeout for NKU to advance the ball. The Norse were issued an offensive foul and the Friars were able to seal the game on free throws.
NORSE NOTES
  • The Norse shot 31.5 percent from the field, while the Friars were not much higher than that at 32.0 percent.
  • NKU continued to out-rebound its opponents, posting 41 rebounds to Providence's 33. The Friars were held to just five offensive boards.
  • Providence held a 26-22 advantage in the paint and scored 14 points off NKU's turnovers. The Norse converted 10 points off of Providence's miscues, and had nine second-chance points thanks to 12 offensive rebounds.
UP NEXT
  • The Norse wrap up the Friar Holiday Classic tomorrow at noon against Pepperdine. The Waves suffered a 66-47 loss to Providence earlier in the tournament. The game will be broadcast on Friars All-Access, a subscription streaming service through Providence Athletics.
