@NKUNorseWBB posts league-opening road win over UIC

CHICAGO  – Northern Kentucky women's basketball started off the Horizon League season with a victory after posting a 67-49 road triumph over UIC. The Norse move to 2-9 overall, while the Flames drop to 2-10.
 
STAT LEADERS
  • Taylor Clos went 5-for-7 from the field, including 4-for-6 from 3-point range, to lead the Norse with 14 points. She also added three assists.
  • Emmy Souder scored all 13 of her points in the first half and went 5-for-7 from the field while pulling down five rebounds to go with a career-best three assists.
  • Ally Niece added 10 points and five assists, the former of which marks a new career high for the rookie.
  • Grayson Rose tied her career high of 13 rebounds and added new career bests of five steals and four assists.
 
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • UIC started off the contest on a 5-0 run, but the Norse quickly righted the ship and ended the first quarter on an 11-3 spurt in the final 3:17 of game play.
  • Souder scored nine of NKU's points in the run, including back-to-back triples to spark the offense.
  • NKU kept the Flames from scoring a field goal for more than five minutes in the second quarter, surrendering just one free throw in that time.
  • The Norse led by a 30-21 margin at the half, shooting 37.0 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from 3-point range. NKU also outrebounded UIC, 22-16.
 
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • UIC was held to 18.8 percent from the floor and just six points in the third quarter while the Norse posted 15 points and went 3-for-6 from long range.
  • The two teams had almost an identical fourth quarter, shooting 69.2 percent en route to 22 points each. The Flames had high production from beyond the arc, hitting four triples on five attempts.
 
NORSE NOTES
  • The Norse assisted on 21 field goals, which marks the most that the team has dished out this season. The team also permitted UIC to assist on just three of its field goals, a season low for opponents this year, while the Flames committed 17 turnovers.
  • NKU also had a season-best percentage from 3-point range as the Norse went 9-for-20 for 45.0 percent. The previous season high was 32.3 percent against Belmont.
  • NKU shot 43.9 percent from the field and outrebounded the Flames, 42-28.
  • UIC held the slight advantage in the paint, 32-28, but the Norse outscored the Flames in bench points, 41-26. NKU also used its 16 offensive rebounds to hold a 13-4 edge in second-chance points.

  • NKU is back in action on Sunday, Dec. 30, when it travels to IUPUI for a 2 p.m. tipoff on ESPN+. The Jaguars are coming off an overtime loss to Wright State earlier this evening.
