@NKUNorseWBB flirts with upset but falls short at IUPUI, 56-54

INDIANAPOLIS –Northern Kentucky University women's basketball overcame a slow first quarter against IUPUI to battle back-and-forth with the Jaguars in the second half, but fell by two points on the road. With the 56-54 setback, NKU ends the regular season at 8-21 and 6-12 in Horizon League play while the Jaguars moved to 21-8 (13-5 HL).

STAT LEADERS
  • Molly Glick led the Norse in scoring, rebounding and steals with 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals, also adding two assists. She went 3-for-6 from 3-point range for NKU's only triples.
  • Samari Mowbray also registered double digits with 11 points and dished out two assists while blocking one shot and coming away with one steal.
  • Jazmyne Geist added eight points, four rebounds and two steals.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • NKU fell behind early as the Jaguars outscored the Norse 19-10 in the first quarter and held a 26-11 lead with just under five minutes to go in the second quarter.
  • The Norse used a 15-4 run to close out the half and trail by four points, 30-26. NKU had an 8-for-10 showing from the free throw line to help close the gap.
  • NKU shot 34.8 percent in the first half, but the Jaguars connected at a .480 clip.
 

SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • The Norse were shot-for-shot with the Jaguars in the third quarter as both teams tallied 14 points in the stanza. NKU had its best quarter coming out of the halftime break, going 60.0 percent from the field without missing any free throws.
  • IUPUI pulled ahead by five points with just over a minute remaining, forcing the Norse to foul in the last seconds of the game.
  • Glick hit two 3-pointers with less than 20 seconds remaining, but it was not enough to overcome the Jags as the clock expired.
 

NORSE NOTES
  • NKU shot 40.8 percent from the field while IUPUI shot 40.4 percent. The Jaguars were held to just one 3-pointer on 12 attempts.
  • The Norse held the edge in several statistics, including rebounds (33-32), fastbreak points (10-8) and blocks (5-1).
  • IUPUI outscored NKU 38-30 in the paint, and forced 20 NKU turnovers that were converted into 16 points.
  • NKU falls to 2-2 in Division I-era meetings with the Jaguars, but retains an 18-3 lead in the all-time series.
UP NEXT
  • With the loss coupled with Oakland's win over Milwaukee earlier today, NKU earns the No. 8 seed into the Horizon League Championship. The Norse will take on No. 9 Detroit Mercy on Friday, March 2 at 2:30 p.m. in the first round of Motor City Madness.
