Alex Willis scores twice as @NKUNorseMSOC defeats Duquesne in overtime, 2-1

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team defeated Duquesne in overtime on Friday evening by a final score of 2-1. Alex Willis had both goals for the Norse. NKU played with nine men late in the second half. The Norse move to 3-0 on the year, while the Dukes fall to 0-2.
 
"I couldn't be prouder of the lads to come out of this match with a deserved win," said NKU head coach Stu Riddle. "To be down to nine men away from home and find a way is a testament to the character and quality of our players."
 
NKU SCORING SUMMARY
  • The Norse took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute. A long ball out of the back from Jim Barkei found Willis, and he was able to slip his shot past the Duquesne goalkeeper to put NKU ahead.
  • With the score tied 1-1 in overtime, Alex Greive played a cross from the right side into the box. The cross found Willis, and he put his header to the left of the goalkeeper in the 96th minute to give the Norse the 2-1 victory.
 
BETWEEN THE POSTS
  • Barkei had a fantastic match for the Norse in the net. He played the whole contest, faced 22 shots, and made nine saves.
 
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • Barkei stopped a Duquesne shot in the second minute for his first save of the match.
  • Connor Probert fired a shot from the left side in the third minute, but his attempt was saved.
  • Barkei made a huge save in the 16th minute on a shot by Duquesne's Zach Hall.
  • In the 18th minute, Alex Willis had his header attempt saved by the Dukes' goalkeeper.
  • Barkei recorded another save in the 25th minute after shot off of a corner kick by Duquesne.

  • Willis looked to score again in the 73rd minute, but his header was just wide of the frame.
  • The Norse were forced to play with nine men after two red cards were issued. One was a straight red card, while the other was a second yellow card. One of Duquesne's players also received a red card, forcing the Dukes to play with 10 men.
  • In the 85th minute, Rikard Lindqvist took a shot, but it was just to the left of the goal.
  • Duquesne's Ryan Landry nearly gave the Dukes the lead in the 89th minute, but his shot attempt was off the top of the crossbar.
 
OVERTIME SUMMARY
  • Barkei made a save in the 92nd minute on a shot by Austin Stout.
  • In the 95th minute, Barkei stopped a header attempt by the Dukes off of a corner kick.
  • Willis scored the game-winner in the 96th minute to give NKU the 2-1 win.
