HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team won its match on Sunday in exciting fashion, defeating Detroit Mercy by a final score of 3-2 in double overtime.
Samantha Duwel scored the game-winner in the 104
th minute to lift the Norse to victory. NKU moves to 7-3-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the Horizon League. Detroit Mercy falls to 3-6-3 and 0-3-1 in league play.
"This was yet another highly competitive Horizon League match," said NKU head coach
Bob Sheehan. "We needed a big moment, and Emily (Soltes), Shawna (Zaken), and Sam combined for an outstanding goal to win the match in overtime. Overall, we are pleased to earn the three points."
NKU SCORING SUMMARY
- Shawna Zaken gave the Norse a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. Ally Perkins played a ball to Emily Soltes at the top of the box, and she made a through pass to Zaken. She secured the ball and put her shot to the right of the goalkeeper.
- With the score tied at 1-1, Megan Patrick put NKU ahead 2-1 in the 41st minute. A Detroit Mercy defender tried to head the ball out of the box, but the ball went behind her and right to Patrick. She put her shot in the lower left corner to help the Norse retake the lead.
- The score was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. In the second overtime period, Soltes played a ball near the top of the box to Zaken. Zaken then passed the ball out on the right side to Duwel, who put her shot in the lower left corner in the 104th minute to seal the victory.
BETWEEN THE POSTS
- Emily Lohmann played the entire contest in goal. She faced 15 shots and made three saves.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- Chloe Mills had a header attempt in the ninth minute, but her shot was saved by the Detroit Mercy goalkeeper.
- Zaken gave NKU a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
- Duwel found some space in the 23rd minute, but her shot was high of the frame.
- In the 27th minute, the Titans' goalkeeper came out of the box. Duwel took a long shot, but her attempt was cleared away from the goal by a Detroit Mercy defender.
- Payton Naylor got behind the Detroit Mercy defense in the 31st minute, but her attempt was saved by the goalkeeper.
- Moments later, Detroit Mercy's Nasreen Kobeissi made a couple of nice moves in the box and fired a shot on goal. However, Lohmann was in the right spot to stop the attempt.
- Detroit Mercy tied the match at 1-1 in the 38th minute. Julie Ann Piechocki took a pass from Rachel Russo, and she fired a shot into the upper right corner of the net.
- Patrick put the Norse ahead 2-1 in the 41st minute.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- Perkins had back-to-back shots in the 48th minute blocked by the Titans' defense.
- Duwel gained possession of the ball and fired a shot in the 63rd minute, but her attempt was also blocked by the Detroit Mercy defense.
- Lohmann made a save in the 67th minute on a shot by Detroit Mercy's Carly Fiorido.
- In the 68th minute, Perkins took a shot, but it was wide of the mark.
- Detroit Mercy tied the match at 2-2 in the 77th minute. A free kick played into the box by Julie Ann Piechocki was headed toward the goal by Rachel Russo, and Olivia Parra tapped the ball in from close range
- Hannah Fischer recorded a shot on goal in the 85th minute, but her attempt went to the right of the frame.
- Duwel tried to score a game-winner in regulation, but her shot in the 89th minute was saved by the Detroit Mercy goalkeeper.
OVERTIME SUMMARY
- Zaken nearly won the match for NKU in the 93rd minute. She found some space in the box, but her attempt was just to the right of the goal.
- Lohmann stopped a shot by Detroit Mercy's Fiorido in the 97th minute.
- Duwel scored the game-winner in the 104th minute.
MATCH NOTES
- The Norse had a total of 18 shots, and Detroit Mercy recorded 15.
- NKU had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
- Zaken's goal was her fourth of the season. She is now tied for first on the team in goals with Soltes.
