HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky's men's tennis kicks off the 2019 season on Sunday, Jan. 13, when the team travels to Lexington, Kentucky, to take on the Kentucky Wildcats. First serve is set for 5 p.m. ET and live results will be provided.
It marks the second season that NKU will begin its spring season against the Wildcats, and the seventh-straight year that the two teams will have faced each other. Kentucky has shut out the Norse in each meeting, most recently claiming a 7-0 win on Jan. 19, 2018. Of note in last season's matchup, every Norse took at least one game off his opponent, with
Blaine Carr winning five games against Kento Yamada in the No. 3 singles match.
The Wildcats are receiving votes in the latest ITA national rankings and posted a 15-12 record last year, including a 10-2 mark at home. Kentucky's roster has a diverse international makeup, with its 10 players hailing from seven different countries. The team is also an exceptionally young one, with six of its players in their first season of competition. Atop the Wildcat lineup is Ryo Matsumura, who raked in All-America honors in 2018.
The Norse return their entire roster from the 2018 season, with Carr as the lone senior on the squad. NKU also recently added a pair of international freshmen in January,
Aleksander Sadal of Radom, Poland, and
Nathan Schwartz of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, France.
