YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio– Northern Kentucky women's basketball suffered a 77-66 setback to Youngstown State on Monday afternoon, dropping to 3-14 overall and 2-5 in Horizon League action. The Penguins advance to 14-5 and 6-2 in league play.
STAT LEADERS
- Kailey Coffey led the Norse in scoring with a season-high 19 points to go with six rebounds. Coffey had a strong outing at the free throw line, going 7-for-8.
- Taylor Clos added 16 points bolstered by a 4-for-7 performance from 3-point range. It marks the fourth game this season that the rookie point guard has made at least three triples in a contest.
- Molly Glick and Ally Niece each added seven points, with Niece running the Norse offense with three assists.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- The Norse shot 60.0 percent in the first quarter, leading by as many as 10 points in the period. NKU used a 3-for-5 performance from beyond the arc, with a pair of triples from Clos and one from Taryn Taugher, to hold the Penguins at arm's length.
- Youngstown State started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 22-19 lead, but NKU was able to right the ship following a timeout. Despite the Penguins connecting at 58.3 percent from the field, the Norse were able to take a two-point lead going into the half, 37-35.
- Clos led NKU with 11 points at the half, going 3-for-4 from 3-point land and dishing out a pair of assists. Coffey had eight points and four boards and the Norse outrebounded the Penguins by one, 12-11.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- The Norse used a 17-11 third quarter to take a 54-46 advantage going into the final period, holding Youngstown State to 25.0 percent from the field while NKU's shooting remained high at 46.7 percent.
- Youngstown State found its trademark 3-point shot in the fourth quarter, sinking 3-for-6 from long range in the stanza. The Penguins also used 10 points in the paint to outscore the Norse 31-12 in the final period, shooting 66.7 percent while holding the Norse to 20.0 percent from the field.
- The Penguins outrebounded the Norse 13-4 in the quarter.
NORSE NOTES
- NKU committed just eight turnovers, the lowest of the season and the first time this year that the Norse have kept their miscues in single digits.
- The Norse also scored 15 points off Youngstown State's 10 turnovers.
- Youngstown State took the advantage in the paint thanks to its fourth-quarter showing, ending with a 30-26 advantage down low.
- The Penguins have won the last four meetings between the two teams.
