Coffey’s free throws in final seconds lift @NKUNorseWBB past Milwaukee, 55-54

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Kailey Coffey knocked down two free throws with 4.2 seconds remaining to help the Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team defeat Milwaukee on Thursday evening by a final score of 55-54. NKU moves to 3-10 and 2-1 in the Horizon League. The Panthers fall to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in the league. 
 
STAT LEADERS
  • Ally Niece scored 11 points and added five rebounds, four assists and two steals. She has scored in double figures in the last three contests.
  • Coffey finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
  • Emmy Souder added nine points on 3-of-4 shooting, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
  • Molly Glick chipped in nine points, four rebounds and three assists. 
  • Grayson Rose had her fourth double-digit rebounding game of the season, with 12 boards.
  • Grace White led the Norse defense with three steals and added seven points.
 
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • NKU had a 7-5 lead after Souder's three-point play in the first quarter, but Milwaukee ended the period on a 9-0 run to go ahead 14-7.
  • Glick hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions for the Norse in the second quarter to cut the Milwaukee lead to 17-14. After a Panthers basket, Clos added a three of her own to bring the score to 19-17.
  • NKU closed the half scoring five-straight points in the final 38 seconds to cut the Milwaukee lead to one at 25-24.
  • Glick had nine points in the half, thanks to three triples in the second quarter.
  • The Norse shot 8-of-26 (30.8 percent) on field goals and 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) on 3-pointers.
  • Milwaukee went 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) from the floor and 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) on attempts from behind the arc.

SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • A 3-pointer by Souder and a jumper from Niece gave the Norse a 29-27 lead with 7:02 to play in the third quarter.
  • After a Milwaukee free throw, White hit a jumper and Souder knocked down another 3-pointer to extend the NKU lead to 34-28 with 5:59 left in the third quarter.
  • The Norse shot 5-of-10 (50.0 percent) from the floor, including 3-of-5 (60.0 percent) from behind the arc in the third quarter to take a 38-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • With the score tied 45-45 in the fourth quarter, Milwaukee went on a quick 5-0 run to go ahead 50-45 with 3:31 to play.
  • The Norse battled back, as White came up with a steal and layup to cut the Milwaukee lead to 54-53 with 13 seconds to play.
  • Coffey sank two free throws with 4.2 seconds left to put NKU ahead 55-54, and the Panthers missed a jumper at the buzzer.
  • The Norse shot 6-of-13 (46.2 percent) in the final stanza, while Milwaukee went 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) from the floor.
 
NORSE NOTES
  • The Norse had a 36-28 rebounding advantage in the game and held Milwaukee to seven offensive boards, leading to a 13-6 advantage in second-chance points.
  • Both teams were evenly matched in the paint, 20-20, while the Panthers scored 17 points off NKU's turnovers compared to 12 Norse points from Milwaukee's miscues.
  • NKU had 14 assists on 19 made field goals.
  • The Norse made eight 3-pointers in the contest. All of NKU's wins this season have occurred when the Norse hit at least five triples.
  • The all-time series moves to 4-3 in favor of the Panthers. The last three games between NKU and Milwaukee have been decided by three points or fewer.
