Zaken leads @NKUNorseWSOC to 1-0 win over Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team reentered the win column with a 1-0 result over Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon.

"We were strong defensively today in earning a shutout," said head coach Bob Sheehan. "We created some terrific opportunities throughout the match. Shawna scored a great goal from Kailey and Lindsey and we achieved our goal today in earning three points on the road."

MATCH SUMMARY

  • The Norse handily kept possession in their favor throughout the first half as the Penguins had just three shots to their name.
  • Despite the clear advantage the Norse had with 10 shots by the end of the half, NKU could only place one of the on goal. Zaken led the team with five shots in the first 45 minutes.
  • NKU came out of the half with more offensive intensity. The Norse took seven shots between the 51st and 59th minutes with the chances of scoring looking greater with every minute.
  • After several tries to execute in the final third, the Norse broke through for a goal in the 60th minute. Ivins and Meyer passed the ball from the top of the penalty area over to an open Zaken near the right-corner of the box, who sent a shot sailing into the net to put NKU up, 1-0.
  • Urgency set in for the Penguins following the goal as they found a pair of shot opportunities and a corner kick in the ensuing five minutes.
  • The Norse defense held strong from there as NKU made several substitutions in the 71st and 81st minutes. Shelby Wall, Ella Holland, Annie Greene, Julia Tout and Madelyn Koewler all saw time in the last fourth of the match.

NORSE NOTES

  • The goal is Zaken's eighth of the season and it's the sixth time the Norse senior has had a goal in NKU's 11 contests. The Norse are 6-1 on the year when she scores a goal.
  • The shutout is the third of Stines' career. She has played all but three and a half minutes for the Norse this season.
  • With the win, NKU moves back to .500 in conference play with five games remaining this season.

  • The Norse will return to Highland Heights for a Saturday night matchup with Cleveland State on October 12. The match will be streamed on ESPN3 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
