@NKUNorseWSOC locks up playoff spot with 2-0 win over Detroit Mercy

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team finished the regular season tied for fourth-place in the Horizon League standings on Friday night thanks to a 2-0 road win over Detroit Mercy.

"We created multiple outstanding chances to score in the first half as we out shot Detroit, 9-1, but came away with nothing," said head coach Bob Sheehan. "Soccer can be a game of momentum and the momentum definitely shifted in the second half. Our back line and Mimi dug in and defended our goal to keep the score 0-0 late in the match. Kiley found Shawna with a nice service, and Shawna did what she does exceptionally well, which is place the ball with power and accuracy for the first goal. Kiley got in behind just about two minutes later to draw a penalty kick.

"We finished in a tie for fourth place in the Horizon League, which is an incredible tribute to our young team which has consistently put in the work in training all season. We are excited to play in the Horizon League tournament."

BETWEEN THE POSTS

  • Mimi Stines had 6 saves on eleven shots faced in her fifth shutout of the season.

MATCH SUMMARY

  • After a quiet start to the match by both sides, NKU's offense went to work as shots from Ashleigh Cronin, Shawna Zaken and Shelby Wall were all blocked beginning in the 17th minute.
  • Zaken and Lindsey Meyer had another two strong chances in the 21st minute. A Zaken header missed the posts just wide and a Meyer shot hit the crossbar.
  • Ally Perkins sent in a trio of shots in the 29th, 30th and 31st minutes, with one being on target.
  • After finishing the first half without a shot attempt, Detroit Mercy's offense found some steam and hurled a ton of quality shot attempts at Stines.
  • Stines and the Norse back line survived the assault by the Titans in the early stages of the first half and Zaken took the match home from there.
  • In the 82nd minute Zaken took a shot from the middle of the box and put NKU up 1-0.
  • Two minutes later, the Norse senior had her second goal of the night off a PK attempt to seal the win.

NORSE NOTES

  • Zaken is up to 11 goals on the year with her brace.
  • Stines is 10 saves away from having the most saves by a Norse goalkeeper in a season. Should the Norse win their next matchup, she has a realistic shot in reaching that because she's averaging over five a match. At 84 saves this season, she is seventh all-time for saves for the Norse.
  • Stines' win at keeper puts her 10th all time in GK wins for the Norse.
  • After going much of the season without back-to-back wins, NKU now has all the momentum with three-straight victories.

UP NEXT

  • The Norse move into win-and-advance mode as they take on Wright State in the Horizon League Quarterfinal on Monday. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m. and be streamed on ESPN+.
