Balanced team effort paves way for @NKUNorseWBB victory over Omaha

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky women's basketball picked up its first win of the season, defeating Omaha at home, 57-40. The Norse improve to 1-4 on the year while the Mavericks fall to 2-4.
 
STAT LEADERS
  • Molly Glick led the Norse in scoring with 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Glick is now three triples away from tying for third on NKU's all-time career 3-pointers list.
  • Taylor Clos, Carissa Garcia and Emmy Souder each added eight points, with Clos and Souder also adding a pair of triples. Clos had three steals, while Souder and Garcia each dished out two assists.
  • Kailey Coffey led NKU on the boards with eight rebounds and also grabbed two steals.
 
TURNING POINT
  • NKU's defensive effort helped set the tone early on as the Norse nabbed six steals in the first quarter, converting those into seven points to hold an 18-10 lead after 10 minutes.
 
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • The Norse held a slim two-point lead with three and a half minutes to go in the opening quarter, but used back-to-back triples and a steal by Carissa that led to a fastbreak layup for Turner, to take an 18-8 lead.
  • Omaha was held to 21.4 percent from the field in the second quarter, scoring just six points while the Norse extended their lead with 12 points.
  • Glick reached double figures before the first half ended, with 11 points and three rebounds. Niece and Souder also added five points each.
 
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • The Norse started the third quarter out with a 9-0 run, preventing Omaha from scoring for the first four and a half minutes of the half. NKU went on to post 21 points in the quarter on 7-for-15 shooting.
  • The final stanza was the lowest scoring combined quarter, as Omaha slightly edged NKU, 8-6. The Mavericks were held to just nine field-goal attempts, but converted on four of them.
  • Clos led the way for the Norse in the second half, scoring all eight of her points. Tayah Irvin had a great impact on defense in limited action, nabbing a game-high four steals in just over six minutes on the floor.

  GAME NOTES
  • Northern Kentucky shot 33.9 percent from the field, and Omaha was slightly more efficient at 36.0 percent. However, NKU's 3-point defense held the Mavericks to 17.6 percent from beyond the arc while the Norse hit seven triples at 35.0 percent.
  • The Norse swiped 16 steals and forced the Mavericks into another 11 turnovers. NKU converted those into 22 points and surrendered just six points off turnovers to Omaha.
  • The Mavericks were held to eight offensive boards, but utilized them well with 10 second-chance points.
  • NKU's bench contributed 19 points, as every member of the squad entered the scoring column.
 
NEXT UP
  • The Norse are back at home on Monday, Nov. 25, as NKU hosts Central Arkansas. The contest will be the annual Victor's Hoops 4 Health, welcoming local elementary schools to the 11 a.m. game to cheer on the Norse and learn more about healthy choices. Monday's game against the Sugar Bears will be broadcast on ESPN3 and admission will be free to the public.
