Garcia, Turner impress in NKU debuts

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's basketball team dropped its season opener on the road at Eastern Kentucky, 69-62.
 
STAT LEADERS
  • Freshman guard Carissa Garcia led the Norse in scoring with 18 points to go with four rebounds and two steals.
  • Fellow rookie Ivy Turner also hit double figures with 16 points and posted a balanced stat line with six assists, five rebounds and four steals.
  • Emmy Souder was just off double-digit scoring with nine points, and Molly Glick added eight.
  • Kailey Coffey led the Norse on the boards with 10 rebounds, while Grayson Rose added seven.
 
TURNING POINT
  • The Norse battled to overcome a first-quarter deficit and led by two points at the end of the third quarter. However, EKU hit back-to-back threes to open up the fourth and held NKU to 11.1 percent shooting from the field to outscore the Norse in the final stanza, 19-10.
 
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • Garcia and Turner immediately made an impact in the early minutes of the contest, but Eastern Kentucky closed out the first quarter on a 10-2 run to hold a 21-12 lead.
  • The Norse answered back in the second quarter, shooting 66.7 percent from the field and outscoring the Colonels, 24-16. Glick hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to bring the Norse within a point, 37-36.
  • Turner had hit double figures by the midway mark, leading the Norse with 11 points while Garcia had nine.
 
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • Garcia opened up the second half with back-to-back makes as the Norse pulled ahead, 40-37. NKU built upon that momentum and outscored Eastern Kentucky by a 16-13 margin to lead by a 52-50 edge going into the final quarter.
  • EKU quickly took the lead back with back-to-back triples, and the two teams went back and forth until the 59-57 mark, when the Norse held their final lead of the game. The Colonels went back out by a point with another 3-pointer before the Norse tied it up at 62-62. 
  • The Colonels closed the game on seven-point run in the final 2:35 of play.


  GAME NOTES
  • NKU shot 20-for-62 (32.3 percent) from the field, while EKU went 24-for-53 (45.3 percent).
  • Eastern Kentucky had a successful night from beyond the arc, going 11-for-25 (44.0 percent).
  • Northern Kentucky won the rebounding battle, 41-34. The Norse held the Colonels to just five offensive rebounds. NKU had 18 offensive boards, converting those into 14 second-chance points.
  • NKU forced Eastern Kentucky into 21 turnovers, 11 of which came by way of steals, and turned those into 18 points off turnovers.
  • The Norse also had the advantage in the paint, 26-22.
